The Truth About Resistance

92% of New Year’s resolutions fail.
Not because people are lazy.
Not because they don’t want it.
But because they try to overpower resistance instead of understanding it.

I did this for years. Five, to be exact.
Trying to write a book. Forcing new offers. Starting, stopping, starting again.

I thought resistance was sabotage.
But eventually, I learned:

Resistance is your nervous system trying to keep you safe.
It’s not a mindset issue—it’s an identity one.

These 7 Tools Aren’t Hacks—They’re Grounded, Embodied Support

You won’t find “just push through it” advice here.

This is about working with your biology, beliefs, and emotional landscape so you can move from true alignment, not force.

Let’s dive in.


1. Mindful Decision-Making: Take Aligned (Not Performed) Action

Most resistance isn’t laziness. It’s misalignment.

Here’s how to get honest:

Step 1: Name what you’re avoiding.
What feels heavy? Sticky? Constantly delayed?

Step 2: Ask yourself—do I genuinely want this, or do I think I should want it?
A lot of resistance comes from chasing goals that match an old identity—or someone else’s version of success.

Step 3: Choose a micro-aligned action.
If it doesn’t feel like relief or grounded momentum, it’s not aligned yet.

Example: I resisted writing a book for years. Every time I sat down, I froze.
Turns out, it wasn’t fear—it was misalignment.
I didn’t want to write that book. When I gave myself permission to follow a different story, the energy shifted instantly.

2. Name the Part That’s Resisting

Use IFS (Internal Family Systems) or intuitive journaling to get in touch with who inside is saying “no.”

Ask:

  • What part of me is resisting this?
  • What is it afraid might happen if I succeed?

You’ll likely meet a younger self trying to protect you from failure, rejection, or exposure.

When I explored my resistance to visibility, I found a teenage version of me who had been shamed for being “too much.”
She thought staying small was safer. I didn’t need to push through her. I needed to make her feel safe.


3. Track Emotional Triggers

Resistance hides inside emotional spikes.

Start a journal:

  • What were you doing before the resistance showed up?
  • What emotion came up?
  • Where do you feel it in your body?
  • What story did your mind attach to it?

Over time, patterns emerge. You realize, “Oh—it’s not about sending the email. It’s about the fear of being seen.”

Your resistance is rarely about the task.
It’s about what the task represents.


4. Process the Energy (Don’t Just Think About It)

Most resistance isn’t logical. It’s somatic.

That’s why mindset work alone won’t move it.

Try:

  • Breathwork (just 3-5 minutes to downshift)
  • Somatic shaking (yes, literally shake it out)
  • Vocal release (moan on the exhale, hum, even scream in your car)
  • EFT tapping (simple but powerful)

Every time I do a nervous system reset with breathwork, I come out clearer, calmer, and more focused.
Not because I convinced myself—but because I moved the charge.


5. Rewire the Root Belief

Resistance is built on outdated beliefs.

“If I try, I’ll fail.”
“If I rest, I’m lazy.”
“If I’m visible, I’ll be attacked.”

Instead of bypassing them, try this:

  • Write the belief.
  • Ask: Who told me this? Whose voice is this?
  • Rewrite it with something slightly more true.

Old: “I’m not disciplined enough.”
New: “I’ve never learned to feel safe with structure—but I’m learning now.”

This is nervous system-safe belief work.
It sticks because it’s believable.

6. Reconnect to Your “Why”

When your goal becomes a task, resistance shows up.
When it stays emotionally anchored, resistance softens.

Ask:

  • Why do I want this?
  • What deeper part of me is calling for it?
  • How will it feel in my body to live that reality?

I used to dread sales calls. Until I realized—this isn’t about “selling.”
It’s about inviting someone into a life-changing experience. That reframing shifted everything.

When you reconnect with purpose, your nervous system gets behind you.


7. Honor the Resistance (Don’t Shame It)

This is the most radical tool.

Instead of asking:

“How do I get rid of this resistance?”

Try asking:

“What is this part of me trying to say?”

Try this simple ritual:

  • Light a candle or take a pause.
  • Say: “Thank you for protecting me. What do you need right now?”
  • Breathe. Listen. Adjust.

Sometimes the resistance isn’t saying stop.
It’s saying slow down. Integrate. Catch up with yourself.

You’re not here to crush resistance. You’re here to integrate it.

To meet it with truth, compassion, and embodiment.
